Leaders Contact Information: Sebastiana Sanchez, 773 491 7244  The Guadalupanos is a society devoted to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of God.

The goal of the Guadalupanos is to promote and encourage public and private devotions to the Blessed Virgin as well as develop leadership qualities within the membership so that we may be better participants in the mission of the Church, striving to be models of commitment and God's love. The Guadalupanos perform devotional works by praying for the needs of our members, our parish community and our Church.

Since 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe – or the Dark Virgin, as she is often called – has been the patron saint of the Mexican Republic. Historically and emotionally, the Virgin is deeply woven into the life of every Mexican. During the wars of independence, she was the patroness of the Mexican armies. Almost every Mexican town has a church dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the people turn to her for help and guidance on every occasion.

The festival of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe actually begins a week before December 12, the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the country flock to the Basilica of Ville Madero, on the outskirts of Mexico City, where the most impressive ceremonies in honor of the Virgin are held. The streets adjoining the church are packed with people who wait their turn to enter the church and make their offering.

The climax of the festival begins on the eve of December 12, when the Conchero dancers gather in the atrium of the church. Composed of traditional hopping or jumping steps performed to the endlessly repeated accompaniment of one or two musical themes, dancing begins at midnight and lasts throughout the day, alternating dancers to keep up the furious pace. The songs and dances of the Concheros have been handed down through generations and follow rigid traditional patterns.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is an important religious and national celebration for the Mexican people.
