The Basilica of Esquipulas in Guatemala contains a sculpture known as “Our Lord of Esquipulas.” Also referred to as “Christo Negro,” the sculpture depicts Christ as a black man, and there are several legends as to how it turned dark in color. One cherished tradition is that the image got dark in one night, a miracle Our Lord performed to please and fulfill the wish of the people of Esquipulas.

Countless miracles have been attributed to the Lord of Esquipulas. Devotion to the Lord of Espuipulas transcends the borders of Guatemala with millions of pilgrims coming from all of the Americas, as well as from Europe, to make the annual pilgrimage venerating the sacred image.

St. Pope John Paul II visited Guatemala on Feb. 6, 1996, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the image, designating the Shrine as a Basilica.

The Feast of Our Lord of Esquipulas is celebrated on January 15, or on the Sunday nearest that date
