I look forward to an upcoming mission trip to the border with members of our parish Pastoral Migratoria. This parish group is dedicated to the accompaniment of immigrants and their families. We are planning to work in Tijuana, Mexico with the Institute Madre Asunta, an ongoing ministry, sponsored by the sisters, priests and brothers of the Scalabrini Missionaries. Today we welcome Sr. Alma and her companion who will share their testimonies about their ministry with migrants at the border. We are honored by their visit and for the opportunity to participate in this important ministry. We are told that the work is overwhelming and our help is much needed. The highest priority is that our mission of compassion and kindness might touch the weary hearts and souls of the mothers, fathers and children who are stranded at the border. I have listened to many of their horrifying stories of the violence and corruption they are escaping in their home countries. They flee from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and other countries seeking safety and hope. Our mission with Pastoral Migratoria is to provide solidarity with them in their suffering, as well as warm meals and clean clothing. We are just beginning to share this news here in our parish, while at the same time we are receiving a gratifying responses from those in discussion even beyond our parish.

We are touched by the outpouring of financial support, not only for the mission trip expenses but also for the sisters’ work. Truly this is a testimony of the generosity and solidarity of Our Lady of Lourdes parishioners and friends to those in need. However the greatest and most essential gift you can give is your prayer, for which we are all grateful. Should you wish to give a contribution please use envelopes provided today. Members of the Pastoral Migratoria and I will continue to inform you of our plans in the weeks ahead.

Hopefully, in September, a new ministry is planned for children masses. Specifically for one weekly mass in English and one in Spanish, children will attend a talk (catechesis) in the rectory by teams of adult catechists. Each week, a different team will share our faith. For this ministry Fr. Dominic and I will provide the training for those interested in volunteering. We have also been busy planning for Religious Education with the children of the parish. Parents please register your child for these classes soon. (Hours for registration are found in the bulletin.) We hope to begin on Tuesday, September 17.

Finally, God bless all our young adults who are soon returning to college. Keep the dream alive!!
